I’m involved in the development of next-generation waterborne binders for the industrial wood market – an application in which a high level of chemical resistances over a broad range of gloss values is key. I’m also working on developing permanent cationic polymer dispersions for antimicrobial applications, as well as acrylics with a controlled particle size for haptics and matting applications. All of these projects require a multidisciplinary approach, which makes them even more interesting and challenging.

The aspect of my work that excites and inspires me the most is...

Working on the whole product development process – starting with an idea or market request – and ending up with a commercial product. It’s always very motivating when you get the first production batch of something that just started out as a thought. You also have to keep believing in your ideas, as they sometimes face headwinds, and innovations may take years to become fully appreciated and commercially successful. But when they do, that makes the kick even bigger.

The breakthrough I would most like to see made in my field is...

A successful transition from solvent-borne binders to waterborne binders. If the coating industry can realize this, it will greatly increase the sustainability of the industry’s processes leading to a major reduction in environmental impact. By reducing exposure to volatile organic components, it will also improve the quality of life for many people. And by using building blocks that are produced in a sustainable way as well, I believe we can truly make a difference.
