Our Biological Sciences competences enable us to find, make, and apply microbes and enzymes to create more sustainable processes, ingredients and building blocks for new products. Specifically they help us to engineer and characterize enzymes and microbial strains in detail up to the molecular level; to assess their performance under application conditions; and to develop data and computation-driven model systems for building efficient “design-build-test-learn” engineering cycles.

Biological Sciences for fuel

Biological Sciences have given us the capabilities for large-scale refining of biomass - and the resultant development of sustainable bioprocesses and biofuels from agricultural residue - as seen in the POET-DSM Project LIBERTY initiative – decreasing our dependency on fossil fuels.

Biological Sciences for food & nutrition

In Life Sciences, our competences in this area add up to valuable enzymes, cultures, flavors, vitamins and poly-unsaturated Omega 3 fatty acids for food and nutrition applications. For example, we can reduce salt in food ingredients.

Biological Sciences for advanced materials

On the Materials Sciences side of our business we use our microbial and enzyme engineering capabilities; whether it’s creating green chemical building blocks like bio-succinic acid with our partner Roquette through our Reverdia venture; or developing biomedical applications like our Bionate? II PCU, now being used to support people with spinal and disc problems.

And of course we continue to share and apply our Biological Science know-how in ambitious external collaborations, such as the European joint undertaking Bio-based Industries (BBI) bioconsortium.eu (a Private-Public-Partnership to further the bio-based economy), BE-Basic and SynBERC. Not to mention the DSM Biotechnology Centre, one of the leading research centers of its kind in the world.

Biological Sciences: Knowledge centers

The BioTech Campus Delft (the Netherlands) is the main biotechnology RT&D center for DSM worldwide. Other DSM RT&D centers with a strong Biological Sciences focus are located in Geleen (the Netherlands), Columbia, MD (U.S.) and Lexington, MA (U.S).
