Not only does it enable the production of gluten-free beer, it reduces the carbon footprint of beer production by up to 8%. In fact, if all the brewers in the world used this product it would reduce carbon emissions by the equivalent of 150,000 trips around the world.

What does all this mean in practice?

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is just one technique developed through Analytical Sciences; specifically a more precise method for identifying gluten in beer – which in turn is enabling us to help the brewing industry deliver a more sustainable beer.

Another is the development of synthetic chains for the cargo industry made with our Dyneema fiber - an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) that is lighter and more sustainable.

Analytical Sciences: Knowledge centers

DSM has key analytical RT&D centers for Nutrition in Columbia, MD (U.S.), Dartmouth (Canada), Kaiseraugst (Switzerland), and Shanghai (China). Those focused on Materials are in Geleen and Waalwijk (the Netherlands), and our Biotechnology analytical RT&D center in Delft (the Netherlands).
