Our strength in biomedical materials comes from a unique convergence between our expertise in materials science (especially polymers) and life sciences. The result is biomedical products that are capable of interacting with the body safely over a longer period of time. Our polyurethane materials have proven to be exceptionally durable, extending the life of implants. They also feature proven biocompatibility and biostability, assuring their safe use over time inside the human body.
Our Dyneema Purity? fiber brand, for example, is the world’s strongest fiber. Its low profile, softness and abrasion resistance make it ideal for use in intricate and minimally invasive surgeries. Our polymeric biomaterials are being used in everything from pacemakers to shoulder, hip and knee joints, from contact lenses to neurostimulation leads. They’ve also proved beneficial for more delicate and intricate body parts like the brain, cardiac vessels, lumbar discs and vertebrae.

Drug delivery technology
The search for better, safer therapies with improved efficacy never stops. Which is why DSM is now developing resorbable materials that our customer use to make implantable local drug delivery systems. Systems made with these materials can deliver precise dosages of medication, over time, to a specific target in the body for improved therapies such as pain management and the treatment of acute and chronic illness.
Increasingly, our polymer-based coatings are being used to coat catheters, guidewires and other surgical instruments. Excellent lubricity makes these devices easier to insert and maneuver inside the body. We also provide coatings with antimicrobial, non-biofouling, and/or hemocompatible properties to meet specific needs for patients and clinicians alike.

Our advanced Somos? resins are now driving a whole new approach to medical device design and processing: Stereolithography. Using this additive manufacturing prototyping technology we can produce a functional medical device prototype for surgical devices in days rather than months.
